Ryan’s experiments on germination

1. Do beans grow better in sand or soil?

Methods

1. We put 1 500 ml of soil and sand in trays.

2. We planted six bean seeds in each tray.

3. We put 500 ml water in each tray.

4. We put them in a warm place in the sun. It is dark under the soil or sand and light on top.

5. We watered them when they were dry.

6. We measured the plants every day when they were standing straight.

7. We put 250 ml water on each tray some days and some days 100 ml or 350 ml.

Results

After 16 days, on 19 August, 3 beans started germinating in soil. On 20 August 1 bean germinated in sand. 22 August, 1 more bean germinated in sand. On 24 August, 1 in soil and 1 in sand germinated. On 25 August 1 germinated in sand. Also on 26 August 1 germinated in sand. This was the last seed to germinate.

2 in soil never germinated and 1 in sand germinated but died.

Soil had the most water (7 150 ml altogether). Sand had a bit less (6 300 ml altogether).

Growth of beans

Germination Rates align="center"

Conclusion

Beans germinated faster in soil than in sand. There is very little difference between sand and soil in the growth of beans.

2. Does temperature need to be cold or warm for beans to germinate?

Methods

1. We soaked the beans the night before.

2. We folded paper towel and put it in two containers.

3. We put 11 beans in each container.

4. We soaked the paper and put the lids on.

5. We put one container in the fridge and one container on the shelf in the laundry.

Results

The beans in the fridge didn’t germinate. The beans on the shelf did germinate.

Conclusion

The temperature needs to be warm for beans to germinate.

3. Do beans need light or dark to germinate?

Methods

1. We soaked the beans the night before.

2. We folded paper towel and put it in two glass jars.

3. We put 11 beans in each jar.

4. We soaked the paper and covered one jar with foil. We put a foil cap on the second jar.

5. We put the jars on top of a cupboard in the kitchen.

Results

The seeds germinated in both flasks.

Conclusion

Beans will germinate in light and dark.
