Google Maps
The Eye in the Sky

9 June 2022

Screenshots taken of Google Maps annual records of my movements. I cannot recall when I actually enabled this facility i.e., Google tracking me. My guess would be that it was probably during 2015 as Edith and I visited the King's School in Canterbury, UK during 2015. I have to admit that it was as fascinating looking at these photographs as it would have be to look at photographs taken during these trips. It is all there, the sleeps, walks, cycle rides, and drives. Amazing!

However the reason I started looking at these records was because I wanted to create some sort of representation of how active we had been back then in terms of travelling, as compared to what took place after the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. To make a specific comparison I looked at the year prior to the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, i.e., 2019, through to the present. i.e., June 2022.

The difference is marked, and in a sense represents what we have missed out on in terms of the opportunities to travel. Not so bad for Edith and I as we are now slowing down. Very frustrating for younger folk who would have had plans to travel during the lock-down periods that have resulted because of the pandemic. Also disastrous for business that relied on people travelling, and of course on people being active generally. Hopefully that is going to change going forward.

Getting it to work on a device that has a touch-screen is a problem that I still have to solve.

Starred thumbnails have an accompanying comment that pops up and remains up, while the mouse pointer is over the thumb-nail.
