The first bank-related card that I had was a Credit Card. I used it right from the get-go for making payments where the amount exceeded the amount of cash I typically carried in my wallet. When the Debit Card arrived on the scene, I got one. However I initially only used it to draw cash from an ATM.
More recently I have taken to paying for goods with both cards. Which card I choose to use at the time is almost arbitrary. I however still use the Debit Card and an ATM to draw cash. To now read that FNB ATMs will all soon be gone, does not surprise me. They have been disappearing for some time already.
So where am I going with this. Well I need cash to tip the CAR GUARD who has watched my car, and helps me get the groceries I bought into my car. I also need cash to tip the person who fills my car with diesel, pumps the tires etc. The list goes on.
Wouldn't it be great if I could tell whoever it is that I am paying for my groceries or petrol, to add R2 or R5 to the bill as a tip. It can be done. Way back in New Zealand in 2000, Edith I soon learned that the amount we would pay for our groceries would be rounded up i.e., $99.13 would become $100.00. The $0.87 would then go into an account in the name of the charity the grocery store was supporting.
It is of course much easier to remove/destroy something than it is to create something new. So having written this, I am not holding my breath in the Good Old RSA!
