On Saturday morning Edith and set of to ride the Karkloof Road Tar. This ride sees use meet up with the Howick Senior (e)MTB Cyclists at the ABSA Karkloo Country Club (KCC) for coffee and a chat. Shortly after passing the turnoff to the club on the outward bound leg of the ride my right pedal came off as it had on a previous ride.
Unfortunately the pedal/crank thread was now damaged and I was unable to reattach the pedal. Given that the route to the club from the breakdown point was fairly flat, I was able ePushBike to the club.
After the coffee I set off for Howick. Given that there were four hills en route, there was definitely going to be quite a lot of eBike Pushing! At first Edith stayed with me because I had struggled to finish my last long walk in the Drakensberg some months ago. Then she disappeared.
Needless to say I made it to Howick Cycle & Gear that is close to the Karkloof Road / Mare Street intersection. The distance was 13.1 kms. I had hardly surrendered my eBike for a new set of cranks and pedals, and Edith arrived. She also had the Bike Rack on the back of our Duster.
This was my second ePushBike adventure. The first was a chain snap close to the Shafton Airfield quite close to the Karkloof Road turnoff to the Karkloof Falls. It was easier as it did not include the two big hills between the KCC and the Karkloof Falls turnoff. The distance was 9.7 km.
This second eBike push / scoot experience has made me think about the Laufmaschine again. While it looks rather silly, it really was quite effective. It was also the ideal precursor of the bicycle and the children's four wheeled plastic sit-on scooter that first appeared once our grand children arrived on the scene. From there they graduated to the JD Bug Training Bike and ultimately the bicycle.
Old Age is not a condition. Nor is it a curse. It is a place you travel to if you are fortunate enough to reach it, and like mature wine, it sould be savoured!
