The Alpha and Omega of

My Dusi Canoeing Career

I don't like SA, I love SA!

Shortly after Professor Hugh Murrell arrived on the Pietermaritzburg Campus to take up his position as the new Head of The Computer Science Department, he invited me to join him for a paddle on the Duzi above the College Road Weir. I guess he wanted to test my true character and also size me up as a possible paddling partner. I was not invited again, at least not until I was about to retire.

At that time Hugh brought a double canoe up from Durban on a Friday preceding a race on the Dusi. The river was pumping as a result of a Henley Dam release to provide water for the race. Before we set of he informed me that there was only one rule, and that was, 'Don't let go of your paddle'. I could carry on, but there is no need, as the pictures tell the whole story, especially when watched as a slide show.

I remain indebted to Hugh for that second invite, and the exhilarating ride that followed. I also owe a debt of gratitude to Jenny Wilson who came along as the driver, and who also managed to take a few photographs when she was able to contain her laughter.

Getting it to work on a device that has a touch-screen is a problem that I still have to solve.

Starred thumbnails have an accompanying comment that pops up and remains up, while the mouse pointer is over the thumb-nail.

Takes a while to load, but then proceeds quite smoothly. Looses image aspect ratio for portrait images i.e., squashes them.

If you have any comments, corrections, suggestions or plain criticism, I would appreciate it if you would communicate the same to me.
