At the time that Edith and I moved into our 18 Hamilton Road house in Pinetown, my Sister Shirley was already suffering from Arthritis. The house came with a single garage, and so I made a work bench and tool cupboard. I had a Workshop, and the first thing I made in it was a bed for Cheryl. The next thing I made was a Bar Stool with a back-rest for my Shirley's kitchen. The next thing I made was the Green Bar Stool. It never left the garage. Today it stands between the front wheels of our eMTBs; where it serves as a platform for the Battery Chargers when the bikes are being charged. It features in the image on the left below.
How what happened next came about I cannot recall. My guess is that my daughter, Cheryl suggested I make another Bar Stool for the garage, and I immediately had a crazy idea. It involved me taking the Lancewood Walking Pole I had brought back from a Sabbatical spent in New Zealand (NZ) in Semester 1 of 2010.
Lancewood is indigenous to NZ and is used to make walking sticks. So, while Edith and I were tramping a trail in NZ I spotted a Lancewood sapling that would be suitable for a walking pole. I swiftly felled it and then after some work, I had a beautiful new walking pole that I subsequently brought back to South Africa when we returned home.
Back to the crazy idea. I would cut up the pole to create segments that when laid out together, would form the basis for a Bar Stool seat. The seat features in the image in the center below. The new Bar Stool for the garage features in the image on the right below.
