"Illegals" is a shorthand, sometimes noun-form, used to refer to undocumented or unauthorized immigrants who cross national borders or reside in a country without official legal status. (Google AI Overview) Illegal immigration is the migration of people into a country in violation of that country's immigration laws, including unauthorized entry or continued residence after the expiration of a valid visa. (Wikipedia)

The "new South Africa" of 1994 marks the country's historic transition from the oppressive system of apartheid to a constitutional democracy. The pivotal year established a unified state based on universal suffrage, equal rights, and reconciliation.

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 - In its Preamble States: We, the people of South Africa, Believe that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity.

The "new South Africa" prospered and my own recollection was there was work that had to be done, and it was started in earnest. The South African Economy, as shown by the Conversely Economist's article, grew after 1994. It then took a knock in 2009 when President Jacob Zuma had to be fired for corruption on a grand scale. However after a partial subsequent recover, it continued to shrink until COVID struck. That saw another dive followed by a good recovery.

Unfortunately that recovery did not last, and the economy started to shrink again, much the same as the African National Congress' (ANC) popularity. The later saw the ANC's popularity decline to the extent that they where unable to form an ANC Government and had to form a Coalition Government that included the Democratic Alliance and a handful of smaller parties.

Unfortunately (2nd one) the economy under the Government of National Unity (GNU) with President Cyril Ramaphosa still at the helm, has still not recovered. Neither has the Job Market and now South Africans are blaming illegal migrants for taking their jobs. They want them out (of the country), and have mounted a (Protest) Campaign to drive them out.

The Government is now scrambling to gather the illegal migrants and bus them back to their home countries. Given the numbers involved, that is not a simple task. It is also not going to be cheap.

So what is my penny's worth? The problem lies squarely at the door of the ANC, and it has been a long time coming. The South African Government simply did a VERY POOR JOB of controlling our borders!

Others might add that the illegal immigrants were prepared to work, and also inevitably did a good job!
