This blog features a video in which an elderly Irish man is frustrated by the manner in which the Digital Revolution has destroyed an aspect of his lifestyle that was very dear to him, namely his local pub. He is going to have to learn to do things differently.

At much the same time as the Digital Revolution started, the CELLPHONE arrived on our doorsteps hot on the heels of the Internet. The cellphone immediately revolutionized our lifestyles and has continued to do so. The biggest steps in that revolution was probably the introduction of keyboards and screens, data, access to the Internet and APPS! APPs that cloaked the cellphone in a Coat of many Colours!!!

Unfortunately with all that power came a significant short-coming, SOFTWARE and the enormously difficult task of maintaining the software in a manner that does not allow the BUGS it inevitably contains from detracting from it's value.

Unfortunately my own recent experience with my cellphone and the apps that I use has seen me sometimes struggling with my cellphone. It does not help when an APP that you are using presents a text FIELD into which you have to type a response, and the keyboard that pops up for that purpose, overlays the text FIELD

Google AI Overview - Yes, software maintenance is generally considered difficult, expensive, and more complex than initial development.

Way back in 1984 when I joined the Department of Computer Science at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was a pipe dream. Talked about, but not taught.

Well it has arrived, and so far so good. The Google AI Overview included above is exactly what I would have said about Software Maintenance in the Departmental Tearoom way back in 1984.
