Yellowwood Cafe
14 June 2026
PM25

When I suggested to Edith we eat out for lunch, she immediately suggested that we do so at, "The Yellowwood Cafe" (TYC). We had been there before, and given that our relationship with the Yellowwood Cafe goes back a long way, I had no hesitation in agreeing.

When Edith decided she had had enough of carting cyclists around the Midlands for rides, and then waiting for them to finish their rides, she bought a bike and joined them. That saw Edith and I load our bikes behind the car on a Sunday morning and head for the Midlands. We had three starting (parking) points for our rides, Piggly Wiggly, Midmar Dam, and the St Johns Village. If the starting point was St Johns Village we would quite often end our ride by stopping at The Yellowwood Cafe for Coffee and a light lunch.

When we were accompanying Heather's family to swimming event our preference for The Yellowwood Cafe saw the whole local family stop of there for an early lunch. The Cafe also had a farmyard atmosphere (goats, pigs, donkeys, etc.) and a playground. It was ideal.

As the grandchildren grew up, and Edith and I relocated from Pietermaritzburg to Howick, that stopped. Until today, when Edith and I returned.

We were greeted on our arrival by the maƮtre d', Sylvia, the same Sylvia who was always there. The owner of the Restaurant was also there, and we soon sensed that something was different, ... and we were right. The Yellowwod Cafe was closing, and today was the last day it would be open.

So Edith and I ended up having a lunch that was mostly the same as we usually had there, but one we will never forget.
